A települések fejlődése, versenyképességük megtartása szempontjából elengedhetetlen, hogy megfelelő marketingstratégiákat dolgozzanak ki és alkalmazzanak. Ennek egyik fontos kutatója az angliai Gregory J Ashworth volt, aki élete nagy részét Hollandiában, a Groningen Egyetemen töltötte, ott tanított kutatott. Fő munkája Henk Voogddal közösen írt „A város értékesítése – Marketingszemlélet közösségi célú várostervezésben” című könyve. munka igazi úttörőnek számít marketing tudományok területén, hiszen két szerző marketingstratégiák településfejlesztésbe való átültetéséről értekezik. 2016-ban hunyt el, széles tudományos tevékenységi örökséget hátrahagyva.
